Opening Ceremony in New York (see gallery briefcase restorations)

02 February 2008

Hi Martin, Everyone was duly impressed with the level of preservation in your restoration. Your skills brought back the case to perfect form, but left all the extraordinary patina of the wear intact. I looked closely at the re-stitching you did, and it truely was right back where it was originally. Additionally, the restorative work you did was indistinguishable from the original leather. The bottom of the case where the four studs are, and the leather hinge for the top were both a wreck when you got the case - caved in, split, smashed. and pieces missing. I am amazed that you were able to restore this part of the case to an undetectable level, as this is a very complex area with having to be just right for the case to stand on its end properly. We toasted you and wished you well, and hoped that you would be well rewarded for your consummate skills.. It will now be only used for special court appearances here in New York City, so will not suffer aircraft baggage handling, and that sort of treatment. It will now be a beautiful showpiece for all to admire.

Hi Martin, I think your credentials of being able to do a historical preservation, and not just a restoration are justly earned. The magic you must have worked to re-use the original leather that the case was constructed of, given that it seemed as though it was far beyond revitalization - with its torn stitching seams, crushed corners, and age embrittlement. The finished case is just what I had hoped for, a reconstitution of the old case to new"square dimensions" giving the appearance of a well worn companion, but repairing the damage. I agree with your decision to re-use the original locks and latches, and was amazed that you were able to re-use the original fabric for the interior of the case. I am sure your expert work will please Mr Kurzweil to no end, as the Peale & Co briefcase now looks like he probably wanted to remember it, in well worn condition, but before it started to fall apart.
